Barry Keoghan was born on October 18, 1992, in Dublin, Ireland, to Irish parents, and grew up in Summerhill, Dublin. He and his brother Eric Keoghan spent seven years in foster care. The siblings spent those years in 13 different foster homes.

As a child, he spent much of his time with his grandmother and aunt. During his childhood, Keoghan appeared in school plays. He studied acting at The Factory, a local school in Dublin.

Barry Keoghan started his acting career by appearing in advertisements in 2011. At the age of 18, he appeared in Fair City. In 2013, he played the role of an "infamous cat killer" Wayne in Love/Hate. He was featured in '71 in 2014 and starred in Mammal and Trespass Against Us in 2016.

He played the role of George Mills in Dunkirk and portrayed Martin Lang in The Killing of a Sacred Deer alongside Colin Farrell who previously dated Kim Bordenave. He won Irish Film and Television Award for his supporting role in The Killing of a Sacred Deer. He was also nominated for the Independent Spirit Award for that role.

Keoghan has also earned a BAFTA Award for his appearance in Calm with Horses. He is also an ambassador for Dior. In 2020, the 29-year-old actor was listed on the greatest Irish film actors list on The Irish Times.

Keoghan will be portraying the Joker in Matt Reeves' upcoming film The Batman in March 2022
