The indictment accused Minkow of setting up dummy companies, writing phoney invoices and conducting tours of purported restoration sites. It also accused him of bilking banks and investors of millions of dollars while systematically draining his company of assets. Prosecutors estimated that 90% of his company's revenue was fraudulent.
Barry Minkow claimed that he was forced to turn the company into a Ponzi scheme under pressure from the organized-crime figures who secretly controlled his company. Later he admitted that the story was false.
On March 27, 1989, Barry was sentenced to 25 years in prison. The SEC banned him from ever serving as an officer or director of a public company again. Barry had become a born-again Christian while imprisoned.
In 1995, After Barry's early release from prison, he went to work as Pastor of Evangelism at the Church at Rocky Peak in Chatsworth, California. He later became director of the church's Bible Institute.
