Her mother Stephanie Hernan runs the Yankee Trader Seafood, a company founded by her maternal grandfather Gerry McAdams in Pembroke, Wales. Her father Thomas G. Hernan is a former firefighter in Scituate while her paternal grandfather Thomas W. Hernan served in the Cohasset Fire Department.

She was raised with three siblings Matt Hernan, Christopher Hernan and Alex Hernan. Her brother Alex is married and has a child with his wife.

Emma Hernan is the founder of Emma Leigh & Co. in March 2020. She used to work in the kitchen and create her own recipes while working at her grandfather's restaurant, Yankee Trader Seafood, and finally, in March 2020, she founded her own company. In November 2020, she launched plant-based mini beef empanadas, being partnered with Beyond Meat.

Emma Hernan started her modeling career at the age of 12. When she turned 16, she started being featured in runway shows in Paris. She then played a recurring role in the Netflix television show, Selling Sunset, alongside Chrishell Stause and Christine Quinn. Her major role came in season 5 of the show.

Emma Hernan seems to be single at present. However, she revealed in April 2022 that she previously almost dated renowned actor Ben Affleck, who is the boyfriend of Jennifer Lopez.

During an episode of Selling Sunset season 5, Hernan claimed that she used to chat with the Oscar-winning actor on Raya, a dating app before he reunited with his girlfriend Lopez.
