The couple tied the wedding knot in 1991 in a private ceremony. They welcomed their one and an only child named Shannon Nicole Dawson in 1990. Their togetherness lasted till Dawson's last breathe in his death bed in 2012. Currently, Mrs. Dawson is a widow living a single life.

Before meeting Gretchen, the Match Game (1973-78) actor was previously married to his first wife, actress Diana Dors in 1959. The former couple shared two sons named Mark Dawson born on 4th February 1960 in London and Gary Dawson born on 27th June 1962 in Los Angeles. 

After being together for 8 years, their marriage ended with a divorce in April 1967 in Los Angeles providing the custody of two children to Dawson. In this way, Gretchen became their stepmother.

The Family Feud (1976-85, 1994-95) host Richard Dawson was suffering from esophageal cancer as a result of smoking four packs of cigarettes per day. His daughter, Shannon requested him to quit smoking by 1994 when he was 61 years old. But he couldn't do so and sadly on 2nd June 2012, he passed away at the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles at the age of 72.
