She has two elder sisters Wendy Johnson and Heidi Johnson. Gretchen was born and raised in Manhattan Beach, California, before moving to San Diego to pursue her education.

Richard Dawson ( 20th of November 1932) was the late American actor, comedian, game show host, and panelist. Before meeting Gretchen Johnson, Richard was married to Diana Dors, a British actress, and also shares two sons, Mark and Gary.

The game show host died on the 2nd of June 2012 at the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center from esophageal cancer. He passed just three weeks after receiving his cancer diagnosis. The news was announced by his son, Gary through Facebook after his death. Additionally, Dawson was buried at Los Angeles' Westwood Memorial Park.
